Yes, they'd be encrypted on Google Drive, which is what I was after, but they'd also be encrypted on disk on the synced PCs, and so in encrypted form in the File History backups for those PCs (which are on a USB drive plugged into my router) and on the system image backups done to a NAS drive. The reason is not because of anything that I found wrong with it, per se, but 'cos I was uncomfortable with my files existing only in encrypted form. Ok folks, well here's the update - I decided not to use Cryptomator. Itsallaguess wrote:I'd also be very interested in your findings with Cryptomator, so please do remember to report back once you've settled down with it. I didn't look into Truecrypt 'cos it didn't come up in any of my "encrypt files on Google Drive" searches, and I can understand why not 'cos, despite the headline of that article, Truecrypt really is quite unsuitable, and for precisely the reasons it lists towards the end of the article, in particular " you will need to sync the entire TrueCrypt volume whenever you want to update even a single file in the volume". Not really "up and running" as so far, other than installing Cryptomator on my desktop and laptop, all I've done it created a test "vault" (imaginatively named "testvault" ) and dragged a couple of random folder trees into it, just to see if it works ok. I know you're probably up and running now, but I wondered if you'd gone down the Truecrypt route and discounted it for some reason? Itsallaguess wrote:Would you have been able to achieve the same result with the last-known-good version of Truecrypt? On an initial play it looks a good solution to the risk of keeping personal data on cloud storage services. Of course, you need to have Cryptomator installed on your other devices too, and also mount the same folder as a vault, with the correct password, otherwise all you see is goobledygook file names and goobledygook contents. There is only one copy of each file, the encrypted one in the vault, the virtual drive (Y:) giving you the unencrypted pass-through access to the vault folder.īoth the contents of the files and the file & folder names are encrypted but each is kept as an individual file/folder, so when you save a file in the virtual drive and Google Drive syncing happens, that file gets synced to your other devices, just as it would if you were saving it directly to Google Drive. Y:) which shows the unencrypted contents of the vault and you treat just like any other drive - create folders in it, drag and drop files into it, edit files on it in place, etc, etc, etc - and it encrypts them into the vault folder. On unlocking the vault, by entering the password into Cryptomator, it creates a virtual drive (e.g. With Cryptomator you create a "vault", which is basically a folder on your Google Drive (or Dropbox or a USB stick or wherever you want), which you give a password (the "vault" not the folder), and that's where your files are kept, fully encrypted. It's free and (unlike Boxcryptor free) is open source, unrestricted and doesn't require an account or registration. Although we have partnerships with various VPN providers, we are in no way technically connected to their products.I think I've found something a bit better, Cryptomator. Boxcryptor can only encrypt files – your files that you store in your cloud – not services.īoxcryptor is not a VPN solution. Services such as Google Docs or Evernote do not work with locally stored files, but store the data directly in databases on their servers. Therefore, you have to install your cloud provider’s software on your device.īoxcryptor is not designed to secure arbitrary cloud services. This responsibility also lies at your cloud provider. On Windows, Boxcryptor is not a sync client, which means that it does not synchronize your files to the cloud. The responsibility of storing and managing your files lies at your cloud provider. Therefore, Boxcryptor does not store your data. It is a security software that adds a security layer to the cloud storage of your choice. This means that every file is encrypted independently from the others.īoxcryptor is not a cloud storage service. Since Boxcryptor was optimized for the cloud from the very beginning, the encryption takes place on every file and access can be shared. Boxcryptor provides a user-friendly, additional layer of security for cloud storages by encrypting files locally on your device.
